Letters of Jewish merchant and banker, Joseph Seligman, 1862-1878, along with carbon typescript, ca. 1931, of Linton Wells's "House of Seligman;" a carbon typescript, ca. 1945, of George Sidney Hellman's "Story of the Seligmans;" a typescript of a series of interviews, 1974 Sep.-1975 Oct., with New York lawyer Eustace Seligman; and miscellaneous clippings, letters, and copies of documents pertaining to the life and career of economics professor Edwin R. A. Seligman. Letters include those from Joseph Seligman to his wife, 1862-1878, written in German during his many absences from New York; along with a letterbook, 1863 Jan. 1-1864 Mar. 10, containing copies of letters written by Joseph Seligman while in Mainz and Sulzbach, Germany, mostly to his brothers in New York, but including some to various firms in England and Europe. They pertain to such matters as gold shipments from New York to Europe, currency and value fluctuations, Civil War news and its effects on European finance and trade, opportunities for profits, family affairs, California gold shipments, the cotton trade, his entry into the exchange business, European sentiment towards the Civil War, his opposition to stock speculations, the importation of European drygoods to New York, other aspects of the drygoods business, interest rates, cargo insurance, successes and failures of other firms, etc. Carbon typescript of Linton Wells's unpublished book, "The House of Seligman," completed ca. 1931, is a second draft of what he referred to as a "master record," confidential in nature, detailed in contents, prepared for the partners of the family firm of J & W Seligman and Company, and upon which a history of the firm would be based. 713 pages. Carbon typescript of George Sidney Hellman's "The Story of the Seligmans," completed ca. 1945, pertains to the personal lives and careers of the various members of the Seligman family, mostly from the arrival of Joseph Seligman in the United States, through World War II. Included are quotes from the diary of George Hellman, director of education in fine and applied arts throughout the A.E.F., kept in France during Dec. 29, 1918-Aug. 12, 1919. 400 pages, plus additional notes. Typescript of interviews was prepared by interviewer Kitty (Mrs. Walter) Gellhorn, and include transcribed interviews with New York lawyer Eustace Seligman (1889-1976) of the legal firm of Sullivan & Cromwell, son of Edwin R. A. Seligman, and grandson of Joseph Seligman. Interviews pertain to his own life and career, and the history of the Seligman family. Also included is a single folder of assorted letters, newsclippings, obituaries, printed biographical excerpts, etc., chiefly concerning the life and career of Edwin R. A. Seligman (1861-1839), son of Joseph Seligman and professor of economics at Columbia University, 1885-ca.1931.
